The information below answers some of the most common questions about natural gas vehicles for both residential and commercial use.
Residential NGV Applications
A. You can refuel your natural gas vehicle with compressed natural gas at a public fueling station. If natural gas is available to your home, you can install a natural gas home refueling appliance in your garage or on the outside of your home.
A. Refueling at a public natural gas station takes about the same time as filling a regular vehicle at a gasoline station.
Home fueling appliances have a compressor and fueling equipment that usually involve a time-fill over an extended period of six to eight hours.
A. The Florida Public Service Commission has approved a special rate for vehicle only use intended for commercial and fleet use.
A. The rate for a personal vehicle is dependent upon the total residential therm usage of all the natural gas appliances in your home.
A. No, Peoples Gas does not install a separate meter to collect this data.
A. There are two components to the costs of a home natural gas filling station appliance:
- The retail price of the appliance.
- Installation costs that include natural gas availability, where the unit is placed and several other factors that vary from one home to the next. Contact a qualified natural gas installer for an estimate.
A. No. However, if you do not currently have natural gas in your home, you should call Peoples Gas to determine if natural gas is available to your residence before purchasing an NGV or installing a home refueling appliance.
A. A person operating a natural gas vehicle must purchase an annual decal from the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles to be exempt from the State road tax on gasoline. Fueling stations may not fuel a vehicle with compressed natural gas that does not display the proper decal.
Commercial NGV Applications
A. Yes. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) offer a variety of passenger cars, light duty trucks, transit buses and other vehicles that come with full manufacturer's warranty.
A. When deciding which fueling option is best, several factors need to be considered:
- Do you currently buy fuel from retail outlets or do you have onsite fueling?
- Would it be more economical to buy natural gas from a retail outlet or to install an onsite fueling station?
- Is public fueling available in your area?
A. Currently, natural gas is about one third of the cost of petroleum products. The following are additional issues to consider when deciding whether NGVs are right for your business:
- Total costs to convert existing vehicles to operate on natural gas
- Incremental cost of OEM NGVs
- Available federal, state and local incentives
- Fuel cost savings
- Maintenance cost savings
- Queue priority for NGV taxi or limo fleets
- Priority access to congested areas for NGVs
- Exemption from local TCMs
- Meeting related sustainability goals
