We are committed to providing you with safe, reliable and affordable natural gas service and we routinely inspect our natural gas delivery system to maintain its integrity and identify any potential issues.

Improper Grounding or Bonding

The use of natural gas equipment such as meter sets, risers or service lines as grounds for other systems is against the National Electrical Code and the National Fire Protection Association Code (NFPA). These attachments compromise the integrity of our infrastructure and present a safety hazard. Therefore, we cannot perform any maintenance on these facilities until the improper grounding or bonding is addressed.

If you have improper grounding or bonding at your home or business, DO NOT make contact with the natural gas service line, meter or electrical wires.

  • Please contact a qualified electrician immediately. Peoples Gas technicians do not remove the grounds.
  • Once the improper grounding or bonding has been removed and voltage is no longer found on the natural gas equipment, please contact us at 1-877-832-6747 to let us know. We’ll resume our regular maintenance as needed.

  2. Service equipment enclosure.
  3. Grounded conductor at the service.
  4. Grounding electrode, if of sufficient size.
  5. One or more of the grounding electrodes used, if the grounding electrode conductor or bonding jumper to the grounding electrode is of sufficient size.

Improper Grounding: In NFPA 70 SECTION 250.52(b) not permitted for use as grounding electrodes describes the following items and materials that cannot be used as grounding electrodes:
