Nocatee Community Signs Natural Gas Residential Agreement With TECO Peoples Gas
More than 12,000 new homes to be fueled by natural gas
TAMPA, April 14, 2009
TECO Peoples Gas and The PARC Group today announced that they have signed a master residential developer agreement to include natural gas as a fuel source for approximately 12,300 homes to be built in the town of Nocatee. It is anticipated that up to 90 percent of all of the homes in the Nocatee community will use natural gas when the community is built out, and Peoples Gas will work with individual builders and developers as construction continues throughout Nocatee.
Nocatee is a planned “new town” in northeast Florida - a coastal development that spans northeast St. John’s County and southern Duval County near Ponte Vedra Beach, just west of the Intracoastal Waterway.
At a minimum, the energy-efficient homes in the Nocatee communities serviced by Peoples Gas will include eco-friendly natural gas water heaters and two additional natural gas appliances.
“Not only will the residents benefit from the energy savings of natural gas, Florida’s environment will benefit as well from the substantial carbon savings,” said Bill Cantrell, president of Peoples Gas. “For every natural gas tankless water heater installed instead of an electric unit, more than 3,000 pounds of carbon emissions are saved from the atmosphere each year.
“With 90 percent of the homes in Nocatee using natural gas, more than 16,600 tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be avoided each year. That’s the equivalent of the greenhouse gas emissions prevented by recycling nearly 5,200 tons of waste instead of sending it to a landfill or removing nearly 2,800 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles from our roads. We are proud to partner with select communities like Nocatee who share our commitment in protecting the environment,” said Cantrell.
“We are pleased to add natural gas as another amenity for our residents and businesses in Nocatee”, said Rick Ray, partner with The PARC Group. Natural gas is a very efficient and reliable source of energy and we are confident that it will be an asset to our community.”
The Nocatee plan is a balanced approach to development that will provide a wide variety of residential lifestyles, employment opportunities, shopping, schools, civic uses and recreation.
Most recently, Nocatee was named the 2008 Green Community of the Year by the Florida Home Builders Association. In addition, The PARC Group was named Developer of the Year by the Northeast Florida Builders Association in 2007 and 2008 for Nocatee.
